LS - The process of making a music video

Shooting

  • Shooting for a music video can take about 5 days of preparation and 1 or 2 days of actual camera time.

  • In regards to our preparation, it will be shorter as we don't have to build any large sets or set up anything that could add to our preparation time. However, we will have do research into locations and other music videos, so this will add to our preparation. On the day of shooting our preparation will only probably take a couple of hours as the only preparation we will have to do is setting up a small set or doing make up and costume. The actual days of shooting will also probably be more than the average music video as we can afford to spend more days filming as we do not have to pay anyone for their time on shoot.

  • A music video shoot can be a very long day, often starting before 7 am and continuing to 1 am the next morning.

  • This is not the case for our music video shoot as we do not have the advantage of outside lights, so we can only shoot when the lighting is right. Also due to lighting issues we will probably spend more days fiming than the average music video.

Editing

  • With most music videos, the music promos are shot on film, so the first stage is for it to be sent to a lab for processing.

  • This is not the case for our music video as it will be shot on DV cameras so the only thing we will need to do before editing, it put the files onto the computer.

  • After up to 4 days of editing, a rough cut is sent to the client for comments/approval.

  • As we do not have a client, we will show the rough cut to the rest of the class and then record their comments on the blog so that we edit music video in order to reach the true potential of the music video. The length of our editing will also be longer as we are not professional editors so will have to experiment with editing, also we do not have a deadline that if we did not meet, would result in us not being paid.

Post-Production

  • The next stage after editing is the online edit where effects are added and the tape is produced to broadcast standard. The time taken for this varies extensively according to what effect work is needed.

  • We will not use many special effects such as CGI with our music video, as we do not have the technology or budget to do this. However, some effect we may use include increasing the contrast or brightness, slowing down or speeding up a section of the video or transitions between different clips.

Distribution

  • Finally, the 'dubs' of the finished music promo and delivered and release forms are signed. The production company invoices the record company for the job. In general the production company will seek 50% of monies on commencement and 50% on delivery.

  • We will not recieve any money for doing our music video as it is coursework, however when the music video is done there is still a lot we have to do. We will upload our music video onto youtube and ask people to view it and fill in a questionnaire about their opinion on it. We will then have to reflect on it through our evaluation and this will be done by answering preset questions.
